October 1st was International Coffee Day and on November 23, we celebrate National Espresso Day.
We would like to take this as an opportunity to give an insight into the culture of the renowned Viennese “coffee house” (Kaffeehaus), as Dr. Temt Skincare & Combinal Eye Beauty (made by Dr.TEMT) is handmade in Vienna, the capital of Austria.
To understand the Vienna Coffee House Culture, we must first talk about history. The coffee culture began right around the end of the Siege of Vienna in 1683. The coffee beans left behind by the Turks who invaded, were used in the startup of the first coffee house. This led to the coffee culture in Vienna that we now see today. Coffee house owners got the name coffee boilers, as coffee was boiled and not brewed then. Vienna even holds a ball (Kaffeesiederball) or coffee boiler ball every year with around 5500 guests in attendance.
Vienna Coffee houses are known for their lavish interiors with chandeliers hanging from the expansive ceiling, plush designer chairs, ornate pillars and woodwork.
Display cabinets full of the most decadent desserts in the world. Like the ever-classic Sachertorte, or the very famous Black Forest Cake, are two of the tempting works of art you must try while sipping on your coffee.
As the most famous coffee drink in Vienna and now around the world, the Wiener Melange. This drink is a shot of mild espresso, steamed milk, topped with milk foam sometimes dusted with cocoa powder or chocolate shavings. When made correctly it is truly heaven in a cup. Try our recipe let us know what you think.
The coffee should be sipped through the milk foam. You may also mix the coffee, milk and foam together. Served with a glass of water on the side to cleanse the palate.
Wiener Melange Recipe:
Built in a large cup
1 Shot Mild Espresso
2 Parts Steamed Milk
Topped with Milk Foam and sprinkled with cocoa powder
Vienna Coffee Houses were the inspiration where artists, musicians and writers would meet together to brew ideas, percolate their opinions and the aroma of creativity was in the air. Mozart and Beethoven were known to play for the guests while they dined on pastries and sipped coffee.
When you visit a coffee house in Vienna your treated as family and the coffee house is an extension of your living room. You can find the locals gathering daily at their favorite coffee houses, it’s as if time stands still and nothing else matters more than a good cup of coffee and a conversation.
Thank you for joining your skincare family at Pauli of Vienna – Dr. Temt USA for a little Viennese Kaffeehaus Culture!
