Exfoliation

Exfoliation Definition:

Exfoliation refers to the peeling of the outer layer of the skin. Exfoliants are ingredients that exfoliate the skin, which means removing dead skin cells from the top layer of the skin.

There are three basic types of exfoliators:

Mechanical exfoliators are products that include granular ingredients which help to take off dead skin cells. Often also called scrubs. Not recommended for sensitive skin.  A typical professional mechanical exfoliation is the microdermabrasion.

Another mechanical exfoliation is the use of home care devices like cleansing brushes.

Chemical exfoliants are products that dissolve the dead skin cells with ingredients like Alpha Hydro Acid aka A.H.A.

Benefits of using an Exfoliator:

  • Enhancing the softness and smoothness of the skin.
  • Pores appear cleaner.
  • The skin’s ability to retain moisture is improved.
  • The cell turnover rate is increased.
  • Product penetration is improved, and ingredients delivery is more effective once the dead skin barrier is removed.
  • Makeup application is more even.

For which skin types is exfoliation recommended?

  • Oily, combination skin
  • Clogged pores
  • Dry or Dehydrated skin – if flaking
  • Dull looking skin
